I'm Moho. I've spent more than a decade as an engineer, building software used by millions of people at companies like Adobe and Oracle.

I started Sufficiently Advanced because of a question from my wife. She has a PhD in Economics and is definitely a lot smarter than I am (also incredibly pretty). She asked me why ChatGPT types its answers out slowly instead of just showing them. She assumed it was an animation. As an engineer who understands how technology works, I knew it wasn't. And I realized it's exactly the kind of complexity engineers take for granted, but most people never get a straight answer on.

I've had versions of that conversation many times since, with people from all kinds of backgrounds. What strikes me is that people who are experts in their own fields still find technology daunting - not because they can't follow it, but because almost everything written about it either assumes an engineering background or explains it like you're five. So people who are exceptional at what they do end up sitting out the biggest shift AI is bringing to their working lives. Sufficiently advanced is for all of you. Just bring your curiosity.

Every week I take one thing and break down how it actually works. Sometimes that's a product or a startup pulled apart to see what it genuinely does, what's hard about it, and what's just clever marketing. Sometimes it's an explainer for the concepts sitting underneath the headlines: what an eval is or why models hallucinate. And sometimes it's an essay about where all this is heading and what it means for the rest of us.
